Shadow Sculptures of Tim Noble and Sue Webster

Hai chàng nghệ sĩ người Anh: Tim Noble (sinh 1966) và and Sue Webster ( sinh 1967) dã fát minh ra một nghệ thuật tạo hình mới mẽ bằng kách zùng các vật zụng fế thãi ..sắp chúng thế nào dễ khi zùng ánh sáng chiếu vào, một cãnh tượng -- bằng bóng (shadow) -- có ý nghĩa dược tạo ra.

Shadow Sculpture is the art of creating objects that are not art in themselves - but create art in the form of a shadow when a light is shined upon them. It is an intricate and beautiful art form that requires vision, skill, precision, and creativity. Londoners Tim Noble and Sue Webster take shadow sculpture to an extraordinary new level - creating amazing projected art work, but using ordinary things that would otherwise be considered waste or rubbish.

Tim Noble ( Born 1966) and Sue Webster ( Born 1967) are two British artists who work as a collaborative duo, and are associated with the post-YBA generation of artists. They first met in 1986 at Nottingham Trent University and quickly became the best of friends and started collaborating soon after. Their shadow sculptures incorporate diverse materials including household rubbish, scrap metal and taxidermy animals that are transformed into intricate shadow profiles. Their first shadow scullpture was exhibited in 1997.

Since then, they have made a name for themselves as artists who are able to fuse the abstract and the representational, in much the same way that Jackson Pollock, Francis Bacon, and Willem de Kooning accomplished before them. Besides their famous shadow scullptures they are also famous for their light sculptures, which are constructed out of computer sequenced light bulbs that flash and send out messages.

In their words : “The art of projection is emblematic of trans-formative art. The process of transformation, from discarded waste, scrap metal or even taxidermy creatures to a recognizable image, echoes the idea of ‘perceptual psychology’ a form of evaluation used for psychological patients. Noble and Webster are familiar with this process and how people evaluate abstract forms. Throughout their careers they have played with the idea of how humans perceive abstract images and define them with meaning. The result is surprising and powerful as it redefines how abstract forms can transform into figurative ones.”

- It was previously a place from which people desperately wanted to leave.
- As one of the Netherlands' most feared prisons for almost 150 years, Het Arresthuis was not a place you would want to stay.
- But following its closure and something of a makeover, people are now paying good money to spend a night at the former jail.

The 105 prisoner’s quarters have been converted into 40 spacious rooms, including 24 standard rooms, 12 deluxe rooms, and four suites, all of which feature modern furnishings and chic interior design.

All of the rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a flat screen TV, free WiFi, and even a personal coffee and tea machine.

The hotel also features a sauna, fitness centre, central patio with olive trees, and an organic herb garden.

Het Arresthuis opened its doors in 1862 and quickly established a reputation as an intimidating jail.

Despite the prison featuring lots of bars, this place has both kinds – the ones you can’t get past and the ones where you can get a drink.

After being abandoned for a number of years, the jail reopened in 2002. But in mid 2007 it closed permanently after which construction of the hotel began.

Het Arresthuis was also called 'bolletjesbajes' which translates as stuffer's prison.

Het Arresthuis is not the only former prison which has been transformed into a hotel.

After closing in 1996, Oxford Prison was transformed into a Malmaison hotel.

Another prison which is now a hotel is the Jailhotel Lowengraben in Lucerne

Built in 1862, it was used as a prison until 1998, before being converted into a hotel.

Mâm Ngũ Quả Ngày Tết ở 3 Miền Đất Nước

Với màu sắc rực rỡ, hình dáng độc đáo cùng những ý nghĩa sâu xa, mâm ngũ quả làm cho ngày Tết cổ truyền dân tộc thêm phần sinh động và thiêng liêng hơn.

Mỗi dịp Tết đến xuân về, trên bàn thờ của mọi gia đình người Việt đều bày mâm ngũ quả cúng gia tiên. Ngũ quả - thể hiện cho 5 vị Kim – Mộc – Thủy – Hỏa – Thổ, 5 yếu tố được cho là đã cấu thành nên vũ trũ trong quan niệm của Khổng giáo.

Ngoài ra, ngũ quả còn được xem như biểu tượng cho thành quả sau một năm lao động miệt mài của những người nông dân. Những sản vật kết tinh từ mồ hôi, công sức của những người dân lao động chắt chiu qua những vụ mùa. Để đến khi xuân sang nắng ấm, lựa dịp tốt lành mà thành kính dâng lên ông bà tổ tiên.

Mâm ngũ quả ngày Tết mang một ý nghĩa chung sâu sắc, thể hiện lòng hiếu thảo và ước mong những điều tốt lành cho một năm mới sắp tới. Mỗi loại quả được lựa chọn để sắp xếp trong mâm ngũ quả đều mang những ý nghĩa riêng nhất định:

Lê (hay mật phụ): vị ngọt thanh ngụ ý việc gì cũng trơn tru, suôn sẻ.

Lựu: nhiều hạt tượng trưng cho con đàn cháu đống.

Đào: thể hiện sự thăng tiến.

Mai: hạnh phúc, không cô đơn.

Quả phật thủ giống như bàn tay đức Phật, luôn chở che cho các số phận con người.

Táo: có nghĩa là phú quý.

Hồng, quýt: tượng trưng cho sự thành đạt.

Thanh long (rồng mây hội tụ) thể hiện sự phát tài phát lộc.

Bưởi, dưa hấu: căng tròn, mát lành, hứa hẹn sự ngọt ngào, may mắn.

Nải chuối như bàn tay ngửa: hứng lấy may mắn, bao bọc và chở che.

Quả trứng gà như hình đào tiên: lộc trời.

Sung: gắn với biểu tượng sung mãn về sức khỏe và tiền bạc.

Đu đủ mang đến sự thịnh vượng đủ đầy.

Xoài có âm na ná như “xài”, để cầu mong cho việc tiêu xài không thiếu thốn.

Gọi là ngũ quả nhưng thật ra, việc lựa chọn và bày biện những loại quả gì trên mâm tùy thuộc vào từng địa phương với những đặc thù về khí hậu, sản vật và quan niệm văn hóa riêng. Từ đó, người ta chọn ra những loại quả mang ý nghĩa tâm linh, tinh thần để “thiết kế” nên mâm ngũ quả.

Ở miền Bắc, trên mâm ngũ quả thường có 5 loại quả: chuối, bưởi, đào, hồng, quýt. Cách trình bày truyền thống thường gặp là nải chuối được đặt ở dưới cùng, ở giữa để đỡ lấy toàn bộ các cây trái khác. Mâm ngũ quả đẹp là mâm ngũ quả có đủ màu sắc rực rỡ. Chính giữa nải chuối xanh thẫm là quả bưởi căng mọng hoặc quả phật thủ chin vàng nổi bật.

Những quả chin đỏ đặt xung quanh. Những chỗ khuyết đặt xen kẽ quýt vàng, táo màu xanh hoặc những trái ớt đỏ mọng, hoàn thiện những nét trang trí cuối cùng.

Nơi khúc ruột miền Trung nghèo khó, đất đai vốn cằn cỗi, ít hoa trái, lại thêm thời gian Tết thường rơi vào mùa đông khắc nghiệt, và cả những hậu quả thiên tai để lại từ trước đó chưa dứt nên cây trái đặc sản địa phương rất hiếm. Người dân quê không quá câu nệ hình thức ý nghĩa của mâm ngũ quả, mà chủ yếu có gì cúng nấy, thành tâm dâng kính tổ tiên.

Mặt khác, người miền Trung do chịu sự giao thoa văn hóa 2 miền Bắc - Nam nên mâm ngũ quả vẫn bày biện đủ: chuối, mãng cầu, sung, dừa, đu đủ, xoài… Rất phong phú!

Khác với người miền Bắc, người dân Nam Bộ có phần cầu kỳ hơn trong khâu chọn lựa những loại quả sẽ xuất hiện trong mâm ngũ quả cúng gia tiên. Do cách phát âm gần giống với từ “chúi” (thể hiện sự nguy khó) nên chuối là thứ quả không bao giờ xuất hiện. Cũng bởi câu nói: “Cam làm quýt chịu” nên người Nam không bày những trái cam óng ả vui mắt như người Bắc.

Mâm ngũ quả của người miền Nam thường có các loại trái: mãng cầu, dừa, đu đủ, xoài, sung (theo câu: “Cầu sung vừa đủ xài”), thêm chân đế là 3 trái thơm (dứa), thể hiện sự vững vàng. Đặc biệt, mâm ngũ quả của người miền Nam không thể thiếu cặp dưa hấu ruột đỏ vỏ xanh, tượng trưng cho lòng trung nghĩa và trinh tiết của người phương Nam.

Ngày nay, hoa trái ngày càng nhiều và phong phú. Vì vậy mâm ngũ quả theo đó mà có thể trở thành thập quả, tuy vậy, cái tên gọi: “ngũ quả” đã đi sâu vào tiềm thức, tâm linh người Việt bao đời. Mâm ngũ quả làm cho quang cảnh ngày Tết và không gian thờ cúng gia tiên thêm phần tươi vui, ấm áp và rực rỡ.
