Tạp chí Travel and
Leisure (Mỹ) công bố ruộng bậc thang ở Sa Pa là một trong 7 thửa ruộng bậc
thang đẹp, kỳ vĩ nhất Châu Á và thế giới. Travel and Leisure viết: "Với
cảnh quan tuyệt vời trông giống như chiếc thang leo lên bầu trời của những thửa
ruộng bậc thang, Sa Pa đã trở thành một trong những điểm thu hút du khách của
Việt Nam".
Ruộng bậc thang ở Sa
Pa do người Mông, người Dao làm. Ruộng bậc thang của người Mông phổ biến nhất ở
sườn núi tương đối dốc đứng dọc đường xã Trung Chải (Sa Pa) nằm trên tuyến
đường từ TP.Lào Cai vào Sa Pa.
Tập hợp ruộng bậc
thang của người Mông, người Dao và người Giáy ở thung lũng Mường Hoa (Tả Van,
Lao Chải). Đặc biệt, ở thung lũng Mường Hoa, hệ thống ruộng bậc thang từ suối
Mường Hoa lên lưng chừng núi có diện tích gần 10km2.

Ngỡ như thiên nhiên - tạo hóa hình thành nên, sắp
đặt những tầng nấc chân ruộng, thế nhưng không phải vậy. Do ở các vùng cao,
miền núi hiếm đất bằng để canh tác, nhất là trồng lúa nước, người ta khắc phục
bằng cách chọn các sườn đồi, núi có đất màu bạt tam cấp để tạo thành những vạt
đất bằng.
Sau đó tùy vào ý định
canh tác mà có thể để khô hoặc dẫn nước từ những đỉnh núi cao hơn về, đồng bào
dân tộc đã sáng tạo ra ruộng bậc thang - kiệt tác hiếm có trong nền văn minh
lúa nước Việt Nam.
Ruộng bậc thang có
nhiều ở các tỉnh vùng núi phía Bắc như Hà Giang, Lào Cai, Yên Bái... Những tầng
- thang ruộng thường có diện tích rộng hẹp khác nhau và tùy từng tộc người mà
cách khai khẩn ruộng cũng khác nhau. Tuy nhiên, có một điểm chung là ruộng bậc
thang thường nằm xoải theo sườn núi, sườn đồi để tiện cho việc dẫn nước, lấy
nước tưới cho cây trồng.
Sở dĩ gọi là ruộng bậc
thang bởi nó có nhiều bậc, mỗi bậc là một thửa ruộng nhỏ, các bậc nối tiếp
nhau, càng nhiều bậc thì càng thể hiện được con mắt và kỹ năng của người chủ
khu ruộng. Ruộng bậc thang bờ nối bờ từ trên cao xuống thấp, theo địa hình mà
có được những đặc trưng mà chỉ có lên tới tận nơi xem mới cảm nhận được hết vẻ
đẹp của nó.
Ruộng bậc thang nước
ta mang vẻ đẹp mềm mại, uốn lượn và đặc biệt là màu sắc của những thửa ruộng
hài hòa cực kỳ lãng mạn, quyến rũ. Đến với nơi đây, bạn sẽ được ngắm nhìn màu
xanh của lúa, hòa quyện với những “dải lụa” song song của đất gợi một vẻ đẹp
vừa hiền hòa vừa lôi cuốn.
Còn nếu bạn tới vào
mùa sắp thu hoạch, bạn lại thấy lúa ngả sang màu vàng, cả cánh đồng ruộng bậc
thang nổi bật giữa nền xanh của bầu trời và cỏ cây. Đây chính là khoảnh khắc
làm say đắm rất nhiều du khách và nó được chọn là đề tài của nhiều tác phẩm
điện ảnh, nhiếp ảnh, văn học – nghệ thuật…
Đặc biệt, ít ai ngờ
rằng chính những tài năng lao động ấy lại tạo nên một bức tranh thiên nhiên kỳ
vĩ giữa đại ngàn Tây Bắc. Ruộng bậc thang chính là một điểm du lịch thú vị
không thể bỏ qua của du khách trong nước cũng như quốc tế khi họ có dịp đến với
vùng đất này.
Giá trị văn hóa của
ruộng bậc thang được thể hiện ở kinh nghiệm canh tác, tập quán sản xuất, hình
thành các thửa ruộng bậc thang của mỗi dân tộc in đậm những nét đặc trưng khác
nhau, tạo nên văn hóa canh tác trên ruộng bậc thang của cộng đồng bà con các
dân tộc.
Mùa làm đất thì ruộng
như những bậc thang bắc lên tận ngang trời và mùa lúa chín thì mênh mang rừng
núi như được dát vàng. Những thang bậc ấm no ấy không chỉ mang lại sự no đủ cho
người dân bản địa mà giờ đây nó còn là cảnh quan làm mê đắm du khách trong và
ngoài nước.
Ruộng bậc thang còn
mang lại giá trị cảnh quan mà không phải là kết quả lao động trong một thời
gian nhất định là có được. Những thửa ruộng bậc thang là một bức tranh kỳ vĩ,
một vẻ đẹp hoang sơ trên nền không gian thiên nhiên hùng vĩ của núi đồi vùng
cao. Ruộng bậc thang, một bức tranh thiên nhiên đẹp có giá trị phát triển du
lịch bền vững.
Được biết, trên thế
giới có 7 ruộng bậc thang được UNESCO công nhận là di sản thế giới, gồm: Banaue
(Philippines), Yuangyang (tỉnh Vân Nam, Trung Quốc), Ubud (Bali, Indonesia),
Annapurna (Nepal), Mae Rim (Chiang Mai, Thái Lan), Sa Pa (tỉnh Lào Cai, Việt Nam)
và Long Ji (Quế Lâm, Trung Quốc).
Mới đây, tờ tạp chí du
lịch Travel and Leisure (Mỹ) đã bầu chọn ruộng bậc thang ở Việt Nam là hệ thống
ruộng bậc thang đẹp nhất thế giới. Như vậy, vẻ đẹp được thêu dệt từ đôi tay của
người nông dân nước ta đã vượt qua được các thửa ruộng lừng danh (đang là di
sản thế giới) ở Philippin, Trung Quốc… để giành lấy ngôi vị số 1.
